Fish Diseases

Fish like all animals get diseases. Some are easy to get rid of such as white spot, some are not, like goldfish tumors. Some are easy to spot like fungi, and white spot you have to look very carefully. And some happen very slowly like a tumor, so that when you finally see  it, it may be too late.

White spot

White spot is a fairly easy to get rid of fish disease once you have spotted it. White spot is when lots of little white spots apear on your pet fish. If your fish do get white spot, go to your local fish shop and they should be able to give you the cure for it. You should try and cure it Whitespot as soon as possible because it spreads fast and will infect all the fish. The best way to avoid introducing white spot and other fish dieases in established tanks is to use quaranteen tanks for all new introductions (fish and plants)

Even if your fish have not got this particular disease at the moment it is helpful to buy it so if they do get it you can treat them with it straight a way.

Dropsy

The cause of dropsy is mainly to do with water quality although it is beleaved to also be bacterial or viral. What dropsy does to your fish is it makes your fish have a big bump on the side of its fins like a tumor and all the scales stick out or bulge.

Anchor worm

This fish disease is a sort of parisite i.e a sort of worm. It comes in to the fish's body, if the fish gets a cut or broken skin. To get rid of it you use tweezers and remove it from the fishes body, then treat the fish with mercurochrome.

Tumors

This fish disease is easy to spot because your fish will simply have a lump on the side of its body and it is caused by cancer. But sadly there is no cure and the fish will not suvive it is best to destroy the fish if it begins to suffer.

Body slime disease .

This fish disease is a bad one. It is made up of a sort of white slime that falls off as though the fish is melting.It can be cured but should be done before it starts peeling.

Indigestion

When they have indigestion the will usually sit around not doing much.It is caused by over feeding, and the treatment is feeding them live foods.

Fin or tail rot

When the fin or tail on a fish starts to lose bits, the whole fin can be eaten away. It is caused by bacterial infection,to make your fish better make a hospital tank and mix one teaspoon of salt for every 5 gallions of water mix it in with the normal water in the hospital tank and wait.Water quality can be a factor in triggering fin rot.

Fish lice

This is a fish disease like nits but on fish.The parasite bites the fish and the fish will itch & then scratch against stones to try to remove it, and may cuts.It is caused by a parasite,and is treated by removing the parasite with tweezers.The fish may get secondary bacterial infection in the wound or cut and this may require treatment.

Gill fluke

In this fish disease the gills on the fish swell up , and it spends most of its time on the suface. The treatment is proprietary fluke medication in a hospital tank.

Fungus

Fungus looks like a fuzzy growth. It is different from velvet because it is more whiteish and easier to spot. It is caused by Saprolegnia fungus and is treated with Proprietary Fungus medication.

Ich

Ich look like raised white spots about the size of a sugar granule. It can be cured by proprietary ich remedy.

Swim Bladder

If a fish has swim bladder disease it will be struggling to swim or up at the top floating.To get your fish better treat them with antibiotic and do lots of water changes.Using a sinking fish food can help as the fish often swallow air when they are fed floating food. Fancy goldfish are particularly prone to this.

Ulcers

Ulcers on fish look like dark red spots or boils. They will usually be bleeding, which is highly contagious.It is caused by bacterial infection, and is cured with antibiotics.

Velvet

Velvet is very like fungus but always yellowish golden colour it looks very fuzzy. It is caused by Piscinoodinium parisite, and is cured with Proprietary malachite green formula.

Pop eye

Pop eye is when fishes eyes seem to expand in a very abnormal way. It is usually caused by poor water conditions. The treatment is to improve water conditions.

Skin fluke

The fish looks as though its wearing a big coat which is swelled up. The fish will be rubbing its self againt the tank wall or rocks. It is caused by Gyrodactylus parasite , to cure it use Propietary skin fluke treatment.

Mouth Fungus

This fish disease looks like a bit of cotton woll stuck to a fishes mouth, it sometimes spreads to the gills. it is caused by Columnaris bacteria, and is cured by useing Proprietary mouth Fungus treatment.

Hydra

Small fry and eggs can become victims to Hydra.Fry die or they look as though they have been half eaten. It is caused by Hydra, a tentacled parasite that attaches itself to young fish. A complete water change is the easiest treatment which reduces the numbers of Hydra.There are chemical treatments to kill the hydra.
